-History- WNSP was started by Tim Camp while under the ownership of Faulkner Media. The station went on the air on September 11th, 1993 and was the Nation's first Sports Station to broadcast on the FM. WNSP began with programming from the American Sports Radio Network. Over the years the station aired programing fron One-on-One sports and Sporting News Radio. WNSP eventually became an affiliate of ESPN with the first drive time afternoon program... The Fabulous Sports Babe. Local programming started with "The Morning SportsCenter Show" which was hosted by Ron Anthony and Scott Harrison back in 1993. At that time WNSP's Play-by-Play of various basketball games; Mobile College, Bishop State, Springhill Collegewas handled by Chris Corragio and Randy Tatano. WNSP became a Dallas Cowboys Affiliate in 1993 switching over to The New Orleans Sants by mid-season. That year WNSP also served as a Chicago Cubs affiliate. WNSP began airing two programs in 1994 that still run today! Talkin' Football and My Blood Runs Crimson. That same year WNSP became and Auburn affiliate and Mobile's home for Tiger Football and Basketball. WNSP became a part of Capitol Broadcasting in 1995 as part of a local marketing agreement between Capitol and Faulkner Media. That same year WNSP began it's affiliation with the South Alabama Jaguars. This was also the historic day that Lee Shirvanian became a part of "The Family". What a day that was! WNSP was purchased in 1997 by Dot Com Plus and moved from 555 Broadcast Drive to 1100 Dauphin Street (The Former Smith Bakery Building). WNSP originates all local broadcasts from Dauphin Street to this day along with sister station WZEW 92.1 FM. WNSP saw unprecidented growth from 1997-2006, proving once a for all that Sports Radio in Mobile, AL is here to stay. Over that same period WNSP begain adding additional local pograms. In 1999, WNSP began the Afternoon Drive show "Sports-N-Stuff" with Tim Camp and Chuck Comisky. Following "Sports-N-Stuff" Taylor Zarzar and Neil McCready began "The Afternoon Sports Drive". After a good run Zarzar left for the Carolinas. WNSP hired Bob Black to co-host the Afternoon Drive with McCready. After Black's departure Don Hawes became part of the WNSP Family. Jedd Williams was then brought in to be a part of Sports Drive. In 2007, Pat Greenwood of NBC 15 replaced McCready. WNSP hired current Program Director Seth Harp in 2008 to co-host "Sports Drive" with Greenwood. SportsCenter has also seen changes in 2008 when long time morning host Wayne Gardner left the station. Scott O'Brien would join the WNSP Family in 2008 wearing several hats. Brien Straw joined Lee Shirvanian in the Fall of 2008 as co-host of SportsCenter. WNSP covers a variety of local sports including play by play of: High School Athletics, University of South Alabama Jaguars, Auburn Tigers, and the New Orleans Saints. |
